The 2026 racing season opener was held Saturday night, May 23 at the Sutherland Automotive Speedway in Saskatoon.

Opening race day, no matter when it arrives, leaves teams scrambling to finish trucks and get the bugs worked out. We were missing a few trucks in line up due to parts supply and family emergencies, but 10 beautifully prepared trucks put on a great show for the fans.

Ricky Sommers, #5 out of Grande Prairie, captured the Five Star Race Car Bodies Fast Qualifier award. Putting Ricky into the RIV Classic Car “DASH FOR CASH” along with #8 Grant Mills, #14 Neil Fitzgerald, both out of Wainwright, AB and #11 Craig Keller out of Lacombe, AB. Keller would not be denied and captured the “RIV DASH FOR CASH” win. Heat race action was intense with tight racing with a little “rubbin is racin” going on through out the pack with #7 Dave Vennard with a win.

Problems with the track surface worsened throughout the day due to spring ground water problems causing water seepage through cracks in the track surface making corner entry treacherous for the Super Truck son slick tires. This condition lead to several spins and a multiple truck pile up in the Traveland RV feature race event #1. Newcomer rookie driver #21 Jayden King out of Humbolt, SK was involved with #20 Brad Cameron out of Viking, AB which resulted in a hard hit into the wall for #21 which destroyed the front end caused severe damage that will need extensive work before returning to the series. The #20 truck suffered extensive left front suspension damage which sidelined the truck for Feature #2.

The YXE AUTO “FULL THROTTLE 4” Feature Race #2 was an all-out intense battle with #14 Neil Fitzgerald being hunted down by #7 Dave Vennard with #8 Grant Mills closing the gap. #7 Dave Vennard was unable to catch the #14 with Neil Fitzgerald wining the “FULL THROTTLE 4” feature race #2.

A successful Season Opener and now the teams are back home getting ready for Race #2, a 2-day race event at Hythe Motor Speedway in Hythe, AB on June 6 & 7.

Pull the trailer out of storage, make a weekend of it, and come hang out at the speedway. There’s a campground right next door, so it’s the perfect race weekend getaway.

SEE YOU THERE!
